The Madrid Theatre opened in 1926 as a 1,500-seat silent movie house at 3810 Main Street in Kansas City. Designed by the architectural firm Besecke and Defoe, the building was constructed in the Spanish Revival style, both inside and out.
The interior originally featured ornate plasterwork and angel medallions on the ceiling, while the exterior showcased yellow brick, terra cotta details, and stained glass. Its opening night included the film Steppin’ Out, a live stage show, and a personal appearance by actor Reginald Denny.
