The Hunter Gary House, located at 1228 West 56th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, is a distinguished example of early 20th-century Neoclassical residential architecture. Built in 1922 for telephone executive Hunter L. Gary, the house was designed by noted Kansas City architect John Van Brunt, Sr. Gary was the son of Theodore Gary, founder of a growing telephone empire that relocated its headquarters to Kansas City in 1907.
By the 1920s, Hunter Gary had risen to serve as vice president and treasurer of the company and sought a home that reflected his family’s financial success and social standing.
