Loretto Academy was established in 1903 by the Sisters of Loretto, a Catholic religious order founded in 1812. The Sisters had arrived in Kansas City in 1899 and opened a small convent and school near 35th and Broadway. Rapid growth led them to purchase a new tract of land at 39th and Roanoke in September 1902. Construction of the new school began shortly thereafter, with the cornerstone laid in April 1903.
