The Kansas City Public Library and Board of Education Building stood at 1211 McGee Street from its completion in 1960 until its demolition in 2020. Designed by local architect Edward W. Tanner, the building served as both the central library for Kansas City and the headquarters for the Kansas City Public School District for over four decades. It was built to consolidate public education services in a single, modern facility that could accommodate expanding collections, growing staff, and new technologies.
