Area: 31st & Gillham

Constructed in 1927 at 3101 Gillham Plaza, El Torreon Ballroom stands as one of Kansas City’s most notable examples of a purpose-built dance hall. Designed by prominent architect Charles E. Shepard with associate Harry L. Wagner, the two-story Spanish Revival-style building was commissioned by Thomas O. Bright, a local businessman who recognized the growing demand for large recreational venues during the Jazz Age.

The building opened to the public on December 15, 1927, and quickly became one of the city's premier destinations for music and dancing.
