The Plaza Theater, a cherished landmark in Kansas City's historic Country Club Plaza, opened its doors on October 9, 1928, with the screening of Street Angel starring Janet Gaynor, the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Designed by Edward Tanner, the theater embodied the Spanish architectural style that defined the Plaza. Its exterior boasted intricate Baroque-inspired details, arched windows, and a 72-foot tower, making it a prominent visual anchor for the shopping district.
